| Editorial Reviews:
Product Description When it's blazingly hot, don't you dread leaving the air-conditioned comfort of your home? Maybe you've tried an ice-soaked towel around your neck - but that's nothing compared to the long-lasting, total-body comfort of our Personal Cooling SystemTM. It's the best way to stay comfortable - and avoid heat stress - when walking, mowing, gardening, watching sports or concerts - just about any activity, anywhere.
Our wearable invention houses a patented, miniature evaporative-cooling system. Just fill with a few ounces of water, place around your neck and switch it on: A quiet motor drives a tiny fan that creates evaporative cooling; flexible sides hold aluminum cooling plates against your neck - and your entire body enjoys up to four hours of relief. What's more, the fan inside adds even more cooling by directing a gentle breeze over the back of your neck. Comes with 2-oz. water bottle for on-the-go refilling.
It's trim and lightweight: the sleek body weighs just 10 oz. empty; 14 oz. filled. Runs on one AA battery

Best Used with Hat with Neck Covering August 14, 2007 Mrs. Alice Amyx West 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
I live in sizzling north Central Texas and do quite a lot of yard work. Of course I follow the shade as much as possible. I am not a youngster; approaching 60. I have a pretty good tolerance to heat but when it gets up over 100F and approaching 105-110, as it frequently does in the summer here, anything helps.
You can really tell the difference when you aren't wearing it or the water needs refilling. Although the air that goes through it is not driven by a powerful fan the inside silver surface that touches your neck is quite chilly. Did I say you can really tell that it works by taking it off in 100+ degree weather and trying to work without it!
I do believe the secret for more success, in my situation, is using the cooler with a cap that has a neck cape that covers the back and sides of my neck. I use a mesh type baseball type cap from SolarVeil.
[..]
I've tried putting chilled water in it but I don't think that makes any difference.
I've used it for 2 full summers now without approaching heat stroke, as I have in the past. Before I got this my husband came home one day as I was working in the yard and was so alarmed by my appearance that he insisted I immediately go in the house and that I not work outside any more in the hottest part of the day. I've now used it for two summers and have yet to have him insist I come in from the heat.
I took two of these down to the Yucatan Jungle for friends who live down there. It doesn't normally get as hot down there as it does in the hottest part of our summers but it is very humid which makes it seem hotter than the real temperature.
Sharper Image is not selling the Personal Cooling System at this time. The only place I have found it is on eBay. The silver neck surface on mine is beginning to deform and flake off from my heavy use of bug repellents on my neck so I'll be needing a new one soon.
If I didn't have this I would miss many hours tending to my yard and plants and sitting out in the heat, on the deck, enjoying the birds at my feeders. On the deck I also use a fan but I can't drag that fan all over the place.
I'm buying more than one just in case I have trouble finding it in the future.
Works as advertised July 10, 2006 Richard Watkins (Lake Hopatcong, NJ USA) 30 out of 32 found this review helpful
I think the people who gave bad reviews just need to spend a little more time with it. It's not going to help you much if you don't understand the science behind it.
I received my cooling system today and have been wearing it for two hours (on a nasty Jersey summer day). I had to turn the fan to low because it was starting to get a little too cold. It's really comfortable (even on my fat neck). If you know what it feels like to have a cold towel around your neck, then you know what to expect from this product. The only difference is that you don't get wet (for the most part) and it STAYS cool for hours.
A couple things you should know before using this:
1. You need to let it prime on the first use. Keep adding water every couple of minutes to get the sponges nice and soaked.
2. Shake the excess water out once you fill it. If you don't shake it, prepare to get dripped on.
3. Keeping adjusting the collar until you can really feel the effect. This thing has a sweet spot, and I'm sure it's different for everyone.
4. Make sure you wear it UNDER your hair (if your hair is long).
Keeps me cool on my walk to work May 2, 2006 CT Yankee (San Francisco) 32 out of 38 found this review helpful
I'm lucky to live in San Francisco so hot weather alone is not really an issue. But I also walk to work (about 45 minute up and down the hills between my apartment and office) and on warm or even slightly warm days I quickly get overheated. Rather than slow my walking pace or give up walking on these days I tried the personal cooling system.
I find it works extremeley well at keeping me from overheating. I am still able to enjoy my walk to work and arrive fresh and presentable at the office.
You do need to be carefull filling the unit. Water flows through when it is full and I recommend a good shake to get rid of any excess drops before putting it on. Other than that no issues at all. The batteries last a long time and the Neck Cooler itself is very durable. I am going on three years with mine.
it works for me July 8, 2006 gabrielle harwood (laguna beach, Ca) 10 out of 11 found this review helpful
I found this product to really helped me in hot weather when I wanted to do outside jobs like gardening.
But my husband teases me about spacey looks, and I certainly would not wear it outside my own yard.
Love it.
